Some call them shakes, some call them fruit creams, but they’re best known as smoothies! Creamy preparations of fruit, milk, yogurt or ice cream, and whatever else your heart desires! They’re the best thing for those warm afternoons when you want something sweet before or after dinner. Smoothies are also great substitutes for meals if you’d rather stay at your desk than go out for lunch.
For our traditional readers the strawberry smoothie just can’t be beat: comforting and safe because it never ceases to please our hearts and our bellies! Some options can be made with or without milk or other dairy products (yogurt, ice cream, or cream). For the first option take about 2/3 cup of strawberries, clean and separate their stems, and add 1/3 of yogurt. Add a few mint leaves and blend for a few minutes and it’s as easy as that! If you want your smoothy to be fluffy add a bit more air. The other option is dedicated to those who are lactose intolerant: replace the yogurt with ice and use the juice of ½ a lime, while stirring the whole time. The result will be cool and refreshing.
If you feel like trying something new you can simply replace the strawberries with raspberries, blackberries, or blueberries, fresh or frozen, and the result will be the same with a slightly different flavor. You can find bags of frozen mixed berries at the market, too. They typically contain currants that will give the smoothie a touch of acidity that rounds off the sweetness of the milk or yogurt.
If your goal is to actually replace a protein rich meal then you’re in luck! Take half of a peeled avocado, 1 not too ripe banana, one fat free plain yogurt, juice from ½ of a lime, half of a vanilla pod, and a few drop of almond milk or orange flower water. Blend for a few minutes and enjoy your meal through a straw!
If you want to clean out your body then a detox smoothie will be your new favorite thing. Rhubarb, radishes, celery, soy milk, and your favorite spices will stimulate your body into fat burning mode and get rid of that aggressive pizza you devoured last week!
So, apart from a trip to market for fruit and grocery store for milk, this will be one of the easiest things you’ve ever done! Get to smoothie making and enjoy, happy blending!
