They might be less important than a well-set table and than the food, but they are essential if you want your aperitif at the evening or a drink during the day to be successful. We’re talking about the glasses: inseparable companions of life, they are always with us at the best moments, letting us celebrate and toast.
Just be careful not to bump them: the etiquette recommends that raise the goblets and then drink is enough and very elegant. But keep en eye on how you grab them too! If the glasses you’re liftingare flutes or long-stemmed glasses, always hold them by the stem instead of the bowl, which you can do if you are drinking a brandy: holding the glass by the bowl will heat the liquid and help it releasing its aroma and flavor.
There are many and different types of glasses: wine glasses are classical and serious, larger for red wine, narrower and longer for white ones;a highball glass to serve cocktail to men, or a more sinuous and bizarre glass for women. The martini glass is an exception, as it’s equally loved by both sexes. The important thing is that they are all made of glass,or crystal for the luckiest! And they should all be the same model, especially if you are setting the table for your guests. You should set four different glasses for each guest, and theyshould be replaced when you change wine, in order not to mix different aromas and flavors. In fact, in starred restaurants, glassesare replaced whenever a new bottle is opened, even if the wine is the same.
Always remember that before you drink, if you have just finished eating, you have to wipe your mouth, to prevent leaving marks, and do the same after drinking. Now, after having learned all these tricks, enjoy your cup: you’ve definitely deserved it!
